The USDA estimated US wheat production at 1.53 billion bushels in 2026, 23% below the revised 2025 total. Its September 1 inventory estimate put all-wheat stocks at 1.85 billion bushels, down 14% from a year earlier. Both figures appeared in reports released September 30.
What it means: Should shoppers expect bread prices to jump? Not from this report alone. Smaller supplies can support wheat prices, but flour and bread prices also reflect milling, transport, energy, packaging and labor costs. Importantly, a crop estimate is not the same thing as a change already showing up at a bakery counter.
