The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s October 6 update showed the national average for regular gasoline at $4.354 per gallon for the week ending October 5, down 11.1 cents from the prior week. On-highway diesel averaged $6.199 per gallon, down 18.3 cents. The weekly declines offer some relief to drivers and businesses that buy fuel, but prices were still $1.23 higher for gasoline and $2.49 higher for diesel than a year earlier.

The EIA’s separate October outlook, also published October 6, said gasoline and diesel prices rose sharply in September. It forecasts average retail prices in 2027 of $3.56 for gasoline and $4.49 for diesel, higher than its September forecast. Those are projections, not promises; the agency says its forecast inputs were finalized October 1 and do not include the G7’s October 2 announcement of additional oil and fuel commitments. Lower weekly pump averages also do not establish that freight or grocery costs have fallen.
