Varda Space raised $250 million in a Series D funding round at a reported valuation of $1.6 billion, Reuters reported on Wednesday. The company develops uncrewed capsules for manufacturing and research in microgravity, including pharmaceutical work. It has completed six orbital missions since 2023.

Why would a drugmaker make something in space?

Some materials crystallise differently in microgravity, which could be useful for research or manufacturing. The commercial question is whether a specialised product can be made reliably, returned safely and sold at a price that justifies launch and recovery costs. The company’s funding supports development; it does not prove the business model is profitable.

The story is a reminder that a large valuation reflects investor expectations about a future market, not current sales alone.
