The Treasury Department and the IRS on Thursday, November 5, 2026, designated 6,576 Opportunity Zones, Fox Business reported. The list covers all 50 states, U.S. territories, and Washington, D.C. The designations take effect January 1, 2027, and last 10 years. Of the zones, 2,594 are rural tracts eligible for enhanced incentives. Officials chose them from 25,332 tracts first identified as eligible.

An Opportunity Zone is a census tract where a qualifying private investment can receive preferential tax treatment, mainly involving capital gains. Treasury said the older program has been associated with more than $110 billion in private investment since its creation. That history is not a new job count for any community. Thursday's list does not lower a rent bill, a grocery price, or a household's tax due for 2026. Any tax preference depends on a qualifying investment after the 2027 start date.

Does the new zone list cut a household tax or rent bill now? No current cut was announced. The designations start on January 1, 2027, and the preference is for qualifying investors, not an automatic reduction in rent or a grocery receipt.
