Newfoundland and Labrador announced on October 26 that it will take the provincial tax on gasoline and diesel to zero starting in December. Finance Minister Craig Pardy said amendments would keep the tax at zero until March 31, 2027. The government estimated the four-month revenue loss at $25 million.
CBC’s headline said gas will be 8 cents a litre cheaper. In the same report, Pardy said the new step brings the tax to zero and builds on Bill 5’s earlier eight-cent reduction. The article does not include a separate tax-rate table, so the new per-litre saving should not be treated as independently calculated.
Pardy said this is separate from a Churchill Falls electricity rebate announced the previous week. He said further pump relief might continue if prices remain above an unnamed level, and he promised two more measures without details. Relief spending so far was put at $79 million, with the next steps taking it above $100 million. The amendments were still to be introduced.
Will Newfoundland and Labrador drivers pay less for fuel this week? Not because of this tax change. It is planned to start in December and run through March 31, 2027, if the amendments pass. No October pump-price cut was shown.
