Newfoundland and Labrador opened consultations on a 10-year agriculture plan, CBC News reported on Nov. 4. The launch was Tuesday, Nov. 3. Comments through engagenl.ca, or by email to agstrategy@gov.nl.ca, stay open until Jan. 29, 2027. Minister Pleaman Forsey said he hoped new steps could be in place by next spring.

The province recorded $165.1 million in farm cash receipts in 2025, mostly from dairy and poultry. Forsey said it has 537 farms and more than 800 people doing primary agricultural work. He expects comments on Crown land, new farmers, processing, and growing more local food. Fuel is the near-term cost.

Wayne Simmons, who leads the provincial farm federation and runs a dairy farm, said farmers' fuel costs have more than doubled and that fertilizer and feed are also higher because supplies arrive by boat or truck. That is an industry description, not a new regulated diesel price. He hoped the federal budget might help. The consultation itself did not change a tax or a diesel cap.

Will this farm consultation lower a Newfoundland fuel bill now? No fuel-price or tax cut was announced. Comments are open until Jan. 29, 2027, and the minister pointed to possible actions next spring.
