Gold recovered slightly on Tuesday after falling sharply the day before. Reuters reported that spot gold was up 0.7% to about $4,144 an ounce early in Tuesday’s trading, after touching its lowest level since August 5 on Monday.

Why can gold fall when investors are worried about conflict?

Gold is often seen as a store of value in uncertain times, but it does not pay interest. When government bond yields rise, some investors may prefer those interest-paying assets. A stronger US dollar can also make gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies. These forces can outweigh demand for a traditional safe-haven asset for a time.

That does not mean gold always moves against uncertainty. Its price reflects several forces at once, and one day’s move is not a reliable guide to what happens next.
