Germany has instructed state-owned energy company SEFE to buy and store an additional 8 terawatt-hours of natural gas by December 15, the company said on Wednesday. The order comes as the heating season begins and geopolitical uncertainty keeps energy supply in focus.
Is the government saying Germany will run out of gas?
No. The directive is a preventive step to add a buffer; it is not an announcement that a shortage is expected. Storage is one part of supply security, alongside imports, pipelines, liquefied natural gas and demand. The price and availability of gas can still be affected by weather and global competition.
The economic trade-off is familiar: holding more reserves can improve preparedness, but buying and storing fuel has costs. The government has chosen to pay for extra insurance against a difficult winter scenario.
