Fed Official Calls for Possible Rate Hikes to Address Sticky Inflation

Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack told an audience on October 12, 2026, that tighter monetary policy might be needed to bring down inflation and that the central bank should make fast, incremental adjustments. "When feasible, I generally think it’s preferable to make smaller adjustments, and to do so relatively quickly, rather than to wait and risk needing a larger course correction," she said.

The PCE price index came in at 3.4% year-over-year in August, with core PCE at 3%. Hammack noted that while long-run inflation expectations remain anchored, persistently elevated inflation raises risks of entrenched mindsets. Her comments follow September FOMC minutes showing officials expected another rate increase this year.

Could this lead to higher borrowing costs? It signals the possibility of future rate hikes, which could increase mortgage and credit card payments for new borrowers, though actual changes depend on Fed decisions and market responses.
