The European Investment Bank and BNP Paribas agreed to provide €700 million in counter-guarantees for manufacturers supplying Europe’s electricity grids. The arrangement is part of a wider EIB package intended to support grid modernisation and may help the bank extend more financing to suppliers.
Is €700 million being handed directly to companies?
No. A guarantee is a promise to cover specified losses if a borrower fails to meet its obligations. It can reduce a lender’s risk and make financing more available, but it is not the same as a grant or cash payment. The public institution still takes on a contingent risk.
The practical test is whether viable projects get financed and whether grid components arrive sooner. Guarantees can unlock private funding, but they do not replace sound project selection or remove all risk.
