CBC News projected on October 20 that Alberta voted to remain in Canada. With more than one million ballots counted as of 12:30 a.m., 76.5% favored remaining and 23.5% favored a later referendum on leaving. A late polling station delayed the count, and questions on immigration and the Constitution were still open. CBC's projection is not a fully certified final result.
Premier Danielle Smith said the early Elections Alberta numbers showed support for remaining and that she would address the province Tuesday evening. She had said that if voters chose to remain, she would not hold a second independence referendum while she was premier. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canadians would move forward together.
For businesses, the immediate change is political uncertainty around investment and Alberta's place in Confederation, including energy projects. The vote itself does not set a royalty, approve a pipeline or change a tax.
Does the remain projection change Alberta taxes or energy royalties now? No. No tax, royalty or pipeline decision was announced. The new fact is a projected vote to stay in Canada while other questions were still being counted.
