Private employers added 86,000 jobs in October, ADP reported Wednesday, Nov. 4. The gain matched September's downwardly revised total and topped the 75,000 Dow Jones estimate cited by CNBC. It is a private-payroll estimate, not Friday's official jobs report.

Services supplied most of the hiring. Trade, transportation and utilities added 39,000, education and health 28,000, and leisure and hospitality 19,000. Professional and business services cut 27,000. Natural resources and mining lost 8,000, and information lost 2,000. Midsize firms added 33,000, small firms 28,000 and large firms 24,000.

Those totals do not reset one existing paycheck. ADP said annual base pay rose 3.2%, pay for stayers rose 3%, and pay for job-changers rose 4.8%. Gross pay increased 4.7%. Chief economist Nela Richardson said changers also got bonuses, overtime and extra hours, the fastest earnings growth for that group since March 2024.

Fox Business reported the same 86,000 jobs but a 69,000 forecast, so the size of the beat depends on the estimate. CNBC said Dow Jones economists expect Friday's official report to show 59,000 jobs, after September's 29,000.

Does October's 86,000 private-job gain raise a paycheck you already have? No individual raise was announced. ADP published a hiring total and average pay growth, not a change to an existing wage. Friday's official count is still separate.
